Parenthood preps parents in a fun-filled parenting workshop

Parenthood is always the next most challenging phase—at times, even daunting, too—for most parents. In order to prep parents as they embark on this exciting journey, Parenthood Magazine has organised an informative parenting workshop, in a collaborative effort with Sunway Medical Centre. The successful event, held at Swan Convention Centre, welcomed close to 100 couples – some who were first time parents, pregnant couples and parents with young babies and children. All participants showed great interest and enthusiasm.

Aimed to provide greater insights into the 'Big-P' topic, the Organiser has lined up an array of riveting topics – all in all, covering essential areas parents ought to know in bringing up kids the right way. Certainly one of the most anticipated and hot favourite among the topics discussed during the workshop was none other that "Why Do Babies Cry?", which was presented by prolific speaker, Dr. Cham Weng Tarng, Consultant Paediatrician & Paediatric Rheumatologist. Dr. Cham further shared insights into another topic that garnered much interest among participants – "Myths & Truths about Children & Illnesses". Ensuring the sessions were interactive and informative, Dr. Cham managed to keep his audience engaged, with his light-hearted presentation. Before he wrapped up his session, Dr. Cham also answered several questions tossed by the participants, pertaining the topics discussed.

Taking centre stage next was Dr. Khoo Boo Aik, Consultant Paediatrician & Neonatologist, who explored the topic of "Myths vs. Facts about Vaccination" with the participants. Moving on was Ms. Saw Bee Suan, Dietetics Assistant Manager, who shared her professional inputs about "Infant and Toddler Nutrition". Ms. Norsyafiqah Samsuri provided the know-how's of "Children's Physical Development Milestone"; while Ms. Nawal Mohd  Shafie, Paediatric Speech Language Therapist discussed "Children's Speech & Hearing Development Milestone". Lastly, an upclose-and-personal session with Dr. Eric Tham Kwok Yeong, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, on "The Importance of Feminine Care".

Keeping the programme flow energetic – rather than bogged down by serious 'parenting 101' talks – what else, if not fun games to save the day, right? Kicking off the game session was the "Baby Wearing Challenge", where two groups – consist of six fathers each – were selected to take on the challenge in wearing the "ErgoBaby Carrier" the correct way. The winning father from each group won himself an ErgoBaby Adapt Carrier worth RM699.

Next, eight fathers battled it out in the "Diaper Changing Challenge" sponsored by Kao Merries. The participants took turns speed changing diapers on five dolls, and the two winners with the fastest scores walked away with Kao Merries diaper supplies worth RM500 each.

Next, the participants were taught about the fundamental childcare do's and don'ts, in a demo session on "How to Care for Newborn"; e.g. how to bathe a baby and the correct way to swaddling a baby.

In addition, participants were spoilt for choice as they shopped for the latest products and services at the venue – featuring several renowned brand such as Betadine, ErgoBaby, Biolane, Fiffy, Hanil, CryoCord, Prudential and Kao Merries.

Another main highlight of the workshop was the lucky draw session, which gave away many exciting prizes. Two lucky participants even walked away with the Hanil UV Steriliser Dryer, worth RM1299 each!

All good things must come to an end. As another fun-filled and successful event – much thanks to all the exhibitors, sponsors for their relentless support and generosity – we certainly hope our participants, the parents and parents-to-be are more equipped now, as they make their journey into parenthood!
